LOS ANGELES (April 30, 2020) - Taking on the hunger for both true crime drama and criminal justice reform, Emmy Award-Winning Producer Corny Koehl will launch “Dear Governor,” a justice reform podcast that examines and takes listeners inside the story of Jarvis Jay Masters, a death row inmate at San Quentin State Prison. “Dear Governor” will be distributed through the iHeartPodcast Network beginning May 7 and can be heard on iHeartRadio and everywhere else podcasts are available. New episodes will air every Thursday.
Throughout the years, Masters, who is also a prolific Buddhist author, has steadfastly maintained his innocence since he was sentenced almost thirty years ago. Masters will transport listeners through the walls of his 9x4 cell, discussing his riveting life story as he walks through the details of the crime and trial that ultimately landed him there. Masters will also share new compelling evidence that bolsters his claims of innocence.
“I met Jarvis in 2014 when I was a producer for Harpo Productions. I read his memoirs, That Bird Has My Wings: The Autobiography of an Innocent Man on Death Row and Finding Freedom: How Death Row Broke and Opened My Heart, and was simply floored by his wisdom and compassion. The more I got to know Jarvis, the more I wanted to help share his story with a wider audience,” said Koehl.
“Dear Governor” will analyze the incongruities and uncertainty of Masters' case, allegations of suppression of information, witness recantations and destruction of evidence, asking listeners to judge for themselves: Is the death penalty a necessary evil to keep our streets safe, to exact righteous punishment and to deliver a semblance of justice to victims – or is it too fraught with ambiguity, contradictions and biases to ensure that we are all protected equally under the law?
“It is astonishing how dysfunctional, racist and arbitrary our criminal justice system is when it comes to sentencing men and women to death,” said Donna Fazzari, Co-Founder of 3 Mutts Media and one of the podcast's executive producers.
Listen to “Dear Governor” now and follow the podcast on iHeartRadio starting May 7, with new episodes dropping every Thursday. To learn more, visit: FreeJarvis.org and iHeart.com.
