Jarvis Addresses St. Francis College Wrongful Conviction Class
Jarvis recently spoke to a Sociology & Criminal Justice class studying wrongful convictions at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York.
Jarvis addressed Prof. Angela Murolo’s class via GTL phone on Nov. 30, 2022 and later stated, “I’m proud to have spent time with students at SFC who were serious about learning. They asked thought-provoking questions that required me to dig deep to find the truth. These type of engagements are more of what I will look forward to when I’m out.”
While Jarvis has spent over 20 years corresponding to middle school, high school, and college classes across the country, this event marked the first time he was able to join students directly in a Q & A session in real time. Prof. Murolo reports she will continue using Jarvis’ books in future classes.
In prison phone justice news, California has recently passed legislation to require all phone calls to and from state prisons be free of charge. The exploitative practices of the prison telecomms industry and their impact on incarcerated people and their loved ones are well-documented. SB 1008, the “Keep Families Connected Act,” will go into effect on January 1, 2023.
UPDATE: On January 5, 2023, Congress enacted the bipartisan Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act of 2022, allowing the Federal Communications Commission to cap service rates charged by prison communications providers nationwide.
